Random Rants in Rhymes
Down home” poetry about modern times for the everyday soul
For many years, Dr. Skelton’s professional advice was sought in matters that sometimes meant life or death, as well as matters of less importance. He now incorporates some of that advice into his rhymed writings, sometimes incorporating humor into serious rhyme by a surprise funny ending.
During the last three years of his medical practice, Doc began to write an unusual column — a weekly news, comment, advice humor feature in metered rhyme for The Barrow Eagle, and continued for more than five years until the sale of that paper. He took a hiatus of a few years before transferring to The Barrow County News and restarting his column as Random Rants in Rhyme. The popular column continues after nearly 20 years.
He has published more than 850 columns, some of which he has set to music. His work has been acclaimed by many people, and brought about his being twice nominated for (but not selected as) Poet Laureate for the State of Georgia. He has been named “Official Poet” of Winder, Ga. and Poet Laureate of Barrow County, Ga.
